After he was arrested by the police on May 9,proclaimed offender Varinderpal Singh alias Makhan Singh received a grand welcome by Kishanpura villagers.

Singh was declared a proclaimed offender by court on November 9,2011,after a case was registered against him for not returning Rs 6,000 that he had borrowed from a villager in October 2007,but despite his proclaimed offender status,he was allowed to contest the block samiti polls, the result for the same was stayed by district administration on May 22.

On Friday evening,Singh was released on bail and a wave of happiness and confidence spread throughout Kishanpura village. The villagers believe that it is “Singh’s victory over the hooliganism of the Akali Dal and he is the winner no matter what the result might say”.

Villagers stated that just because Singh refused to withdraw his nomination papers, despite pressure from Akali Dal,he was arrested on May 9. Singh was escorted by the villagers from the jail to the village in an open jeep.

The result of the seat will be handed over by the district administration to the election commission in a sealed cover. If Singh wins, legal opinion will be taken, for the people of Kishanpura,Singh is their sole winner.

“Congress and other party candidates withdrew their papers owing to pressure from the Akali Dal,but Singh stood firm on his stand to contest the election, despite being arrested. He hasn’t committed a major crime and thus all the villagers are backing him,” said Jagsir Singh,a villager.
