Prime suspect in Chennai techie murder held

Crime branch CID officials boarded a flight to Kolkata Tuesday after a tip-off from two other accused.

The prime suspect in the sexual assault and murder of an IT firm employee was arrested by the Tamil Nadu CID officials from a Howrah-bound train early on Wednesday.

Crime branch CID officials boarded a flight to Kolkata Tuesday after a tip-off from two other accused, and arrested Ujjan Mandal, 21, from the Howrah Express before it reached the station.

Mandal, a native of Malda in West Bengal, boarded the train Monday in a bid to escape an imminent arrest for allegedly murdering 23-year-old Tata Consultancy Services employee B Uma Maheswari. Her highly decomposed body with stab wounds was found nine days after she went missing on the night of February 13.

In a breakthrough, two suspects Ram and Uttam Mandal, also from Malda, were arrested Tuesday. On interrogation, they admitted to having committed crime, and revealed the role played by Ujjan in the sexual assault and murder.

Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, IG (CB-CID), claimed the suspects had used Uma’s credit card at an ATM and at a textile shop, and were captured on CCTV camera.

The official said the weapon used in the crime has been found, and the victim’s ear studs were recovered from Ram and Uttam.
The three accused, working at a construction site near the victim’s office in IT Corridor on the outskirts of Chennai, were reportedly in an inebriated state when they saw her walking out of the TCS building at around 10.20 pm on February 13. They robbed, sexually-assaulted and stabbed Uma.
