Photo in email was on Tehelka’s server, victim tells police

The woman told police the picture was taken in the Green Room of Grand Hyatt, Bambolim in presence of several guests during Think 2013.

The complainant in the Tehelka sexual assault case has told the Goa Police that the photograph appearing in a recent chain email was last available on the Tehelka server. She has alleged that the email indicates malicious intent because the picture — which shows her with Tehelka’s founder editor Tarun Tejpal and Hollywood actor Robert de Niro — has been taken out of context and given a wrong date on purpose.

The woman has told the police that the picture was taken in the Green Room of the Grand Hyatt, Bambolim in the presence of several guests during Think 2013, and that she had been urged by Tejpal and other staffers to come into the frame.

She has said that she received the email from an unknown person on January 28, with comments that questioned her “appearance” and “veracity of her rape complaint”. The same mail has reached many mediapersons, according to the complainant.

In her written statement, the woman is learnt to have said: “I have been informed by several senior editors and journalists that my photographs, false stories about my life and a total obfuscation of the official conversations I had with senior Tehelka editors after I made the complaint, are in wide circulation.

I am aware that there has been a systematic and virulent campaign to falsify facts and the truth. I have remained silent against this campaign of slander and vilification, although it has caused me hurt and trauma, because I have faith in the legal process and respect its sanctity,” her statement reads.

It says: “This email clearly discloses my identity and seeks to deny me the protection granted by law, by encouraging a wide dissemination of the contents of the same. It is a deliberate move to obstruct the course of justice and prevent me from pursuing my complaint, by tarnishing my character with total lies and making it impossible for me to exist in society, and in particular within my own fraternity. The email contains information that is grossly offensive, has a menacing character and is aimed at intimidating me….”
