PETA volunteers held a silent demonstration outside the Forest Department headquarters here on Thursday against alleged inhuman shackling of elephant Sunder by a Kolhapur religious trust.

They also alleged inaction by the Forest Department in the matter. Celebrities such as Paul McCartney and Pamela Anderson have appealed for the release of Sunder.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) S W H Naqvi said: “I was told there was some demonstration, but nobody came to me with anything.”

Asked why nobody met Naqvi,Benazir from the PETA Media and Celebrity wing said,“We only wanted to hold a silent protest, didn’t want any negativity. Our representations are already with the government, which is not doing enough to release the elephant.”
