Pakistani diplomat assaulted in Delhi road rage case,man held

Syed Raza was returning to his residence when his car hit a 2-wheeler near JNU new campus S Delhi.

A Pakistani diplomat and his driver were assaulted in what is believed to be a case of road rage on Monday evening.

Police said Pakistani diplomat Syed Zirgham Raza was returning to his Vasant Vihar residence in his official vehicle,when his car hit a two-wheeler near JNU new campus in South Delhi.

According to police,the woman who was riding pillion fell off the motorcycle due to the impact. Eyewitnesses told police that the rider,Rahul alias Rohit,slapped the car’s driver a couple of times. When the diplomat intervened,he was also manhandled by Rahul,who claimed that his wife had suffered severe injuries.

Police said they were informed about the incident by the diplomat through a PCR call and a daily diary (DD) entry was made at the police station. The diplomat told police that the biker was speeding.

By the time police reached the spot,the diplomat had left.

Till late night,police were trying to get in touch with the Pakistan High Commission to request the diplomat for a medical examination. Police said they were awaiting the diplomat’s response and would register an FIR based on the DD entry,if the diplomat did not turn up.

Late Monday night,police claimed to have spoken to the driver. “The driver is yet to come to the police station. Based on his statement,a case will be registered,” Rajan Bhagat,PRO (Delhi Police),said.

Describing the incident as “unfortunate and regrettable”,the Pakistan High Commission has lodged a strong protest over the assault with the Ministry of External Affairs,urging “immediate and thorough inquiry” into the incident.

In a statement,the Pakistan High Commission said their diplomat Syed Zirgham Raza,and his driver,were assaulted near JNU by a motorcyclist.

Pakistan High Commission spokesperson Manzoor Ali Memon said Raza suffered injuries,and said there was “no provocation” that led to the assault.

Rahul has been detained.
