National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has asked the Home Ministry to make a presentation before him on the Italian marines case in a bid to explore possibilities to resolve the issue at diplomatic level.
The NSA’s request comes after Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August to enquire about the case proceedings.
Doval has asked Home Secretary Anil Goswami to come up with a presentation stating the factual position in the case. The move came amid reports that Italy has sought a “consensual solution” to the issue. The two marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, are accused of killing two Kerala fishermen off Kerala coast in 2012.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi may also be called to attend the meeting.
Rohatgi had earlier represented the marines in the Supreme Court.
The External Affairs Ministry, however, has denied that New Delhi was in talks with Rome to resolve the issue.
