Normal life affected at Metro bridge mishap site

The slow pace of debris clearance operations at the Delhi Metro accident site in south Delhi has affected normal life in the locality.

The slow pace of debris clearance operations at the Delhi Metro accident site in south Delhi has affected normal life in the locality, with locals deprived of power and water supply besides witnessing problems in traffic movement. Traffic was at a standstill in areas leading to the mishap site in Jamrudpur this morning, where six persons were killed after an under-construction bridge collapsed yesterday morning.

Vehicular movement towards Nehru Place, one of the capital’s main commercial hubs, was badly affected with traffic chaos witnessed in many places like Greater Kailash,Amar Colony,Moolchand and East of Kailash. Authorities had yesterday closed the traffic on the roads around Lady Shri Ram College to ensure smooth clearance of the debris. Pradeep Singh,a PR executive, said that it took almost three hours for him to reach his office in Nehru Place from his residence in East of Kailash. Water supply has not been restored in the area which witnessed a pipe-burst after a portion of the collapsed bridge fell on it. Power supply has also been temporarily snapped. “Power went off at around 7.45 am. There has been no water also. We hope the situation will improve soon,” Kuldeep Singh,a local resident said.

A senior police official said,”the process to clear debris is going on at fast pace. The traffic in the area is disrupted and we advise commuters to avoid the route connecting East of Kailash to Nehru Place”. Locals feel that with the second mishap on the site today, their ordeal is likely to continue even tomorrow. “They will not be able to clear the area of debris today. Our ordeal will continue for another day and we have no word when basic amenities will be restored,” Inderjeet Singh,a media executive, said.

Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said traffic on one road is likely to be open by tomorrow afternoon and the other lane will be open in six to seven days,by which time the whole clearing up operation is expected to be completed.
