NC-Cong coalition bags 5 out of 6 seats in J-K LC elections

Coalition partners NC and Congress contested three seats and two seats respectively,while PDP had contested two seats.

The ruling Congress-NC coalition has bagged five seats out of six in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council elections held on Wednesday.

Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won one seat. After the polls concluded,counting began in the presence of Returning Officer and Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Mohammad Ramzan,who later announced that three seats had been won by the National Conference,two by the Congress and one by the PDP.

The victorious candidates are Jehangir Mir,Yashpal Khajuria (both Congress),Dharam Veer Singh Batra,Noor Hussain and Bashir Ahmed (all NC) and Mohmmad Ashrif Mir(PDP).

Three members who are residents of Kashmir province have been elected for Kashmir region,while three members who are residents of Jammu province have been elected,including one from Poonch district. None of them are members of the Legislative Assembly.

Ramzan had issued a notice announcing the election on March 24.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief Saifuddin Soz said it was a victory of the coalition government,particularly the Congress party.

“It has strengthened us (NC-Congress alliance). We have become more powerful and united during these elections,” Soz told reporters.

Noting that media reports that there would be cross-voting by Congress members due to groupism have been proved “wrong and false”,Soz said,”This victory is a move of unity in Congress.”
