Navy pays last respects to officers
The body of Kumar will be flown to Ranchi on Saturday.
A wreath-laying ceremony was conducted for deceased naval officers, Lieutenant Commander Kapish Singh Muwal (26) and Lieutenant Manoranjan Kumar (25), at the Indian Naval Hospital Ship Asvini in Colaba Friday morning, the Navy said. Lieutenant Commander Muwal was cremated by his family in South Mumbai crematorium on Friday evening.
Both men lost their lives on Wednesday after a fire broke out in the battery pit of INS Sindhuratna. The Russian made kilo-class submarine caught fire 100 nautical miles away from Mumbai when it was undergoing refit trials. Their charred bodies were recovered from the vessel on Thursday.
Fathers of both officers were present at the ceremony at the hospital, said a Naval spokesperson. Wreaths were laid by Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command, as well as other Flag Officers. “The ceremony is an opportunity for Naval officers to pay respects to the deceased. Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha met the families of the deceased officers and expressed his deepest condolences to the brave heroes who had made the ultimate sacrifice in fighting the fire on the submarine,” said the spokesperson.
Muwal, an alumnus of the Army school, Bareilly, was cremated with military honours at the Chandanwadi crematorium in Marine Lines on Friday evening in the presence of family, said the spokesperson. The body of Kumar will be flown to Ranchi on Saturday. “Several naval personnel will accompany the body. Our inquiries so far have shown that both men ensured that the lives of their colleagues were saved but laid down their own as a result,” said the spokesperson.
