Nanavati panel ready with final report
After 12 years of its appointment to probe into 2002 Godhra train carnage case, Commission is likely to submit its final report
After 12 years of its appointment and 24 extensions to probe into the 2002 Godhra train carnage case and the subsequent communal riots in parts of Gujarat, the Nanavati-Mehta Commission has completed its probe and is likely to submit its final report to the state government next week.
Last month, the Commission sought one month’s extension to submit the report to complete indexing and printing of the report. The term of the Commission was accordingly extended by the state government till October 31.
Talking to The Indian Express, Justice (retired) G T Nanavati, who is heading the Commission, said, “Our probe is over and the final report has gone to the government press for printing. So, we are not going to seek any extension now. We expect the report to come back to us in the next 4-5 days. So, we may submit the same to the state government next week or the week after that since there are three holidays next week.”
