Mizoram plans to retire cops with alcohol, drug addiction

The issue of alcoholism has been a talking point among senior police officials.

The Mizoram government is considering the possibility of shunting out policemen who are either alcoholics or drug addicts by referring them to a medical board and asking them to leave the force on “invalid pension”.

The proposal was considered in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla and attended by state Home Minister R Lalzirliana, top Home Department officials and police officers Tuesday.

During the meeting, Lalzirliana said there are those among the police “who are not worth employing either because of a lack of self-discipline, alcoholism or drug addiction.” He estimated there must be at least 20 to 30 policemen who are either alcoholics or drug addicts in each of the state’s eight police battalions.

The issue of alcoholism has been a talking point among senior police officials. In a crime review meeting earlier this year, then DGP A K Patnaik had also asked senior police officers to impress upon their men the “ill-effects of excessive alcohol abuse”.

In another meeting last month, DIG (Northern Range) Zorammuana told SPs of several districts that they should conduct special sessions to wean personnel off alcohol.
