Maharashtra is set to receive a whopping Rs 13,250 crore this year to carry out various initiatives under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM),Dr D S Dakhure,Acting Director General Health Services,has said.
Last year,the state Government had received Rs 11,094 crore,Dakhure told The Indian Express. The state submitted its project plan for the financial year that includes expenditure on upgrading infrastructure and repair and maintenance of old buildings used as health centres.
For the first time,the Government has also embarked upon a novel plan where patient welfare committees will now be involved in ensuring that each patient in a rural hospital or primary health centre gets his/her medicine free of cost.

Pregnant women delivering at hospitals and government institutions will be given Rs 800 each for the cost of medicines,Dakhure said. Apart from encouraging the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY),emphasis will also be laid on developing school health programmes,says Madhukar Chowdhary,Director of the NRHM in Maharashtra.
The NRHM was launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in April 2005. While it officially took off in Maharashtra only in 2007,the main activities include strengthening primary health centres and upgrading facilities at rural hospitals so that the rural poor can get access to health care.
