Justice Ganguly named by law intern in sexual harassment case

Ganguly demitted office as Supreme Court judge on February 3,2012.

Former Supreme Court Judge Ashok Ganguly has been identified as the person accused by a young female lawyer of having sexually harassed her last December. In its report submitted to Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam yesterday,a committee of three Judges of the Supreme Court, which had been constituted to probe the matter after the law intern wrote about the incident on a blog, has also referred to the statements of both the girl and Justice Ganguly. He is now Chairperson of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission.

“The statement of law intern was recorded. She had also submitted three affidavits. The statement of Mr Justice A K Ganguly (retd) has also been recorded by the committee. The committee has submitted its report to the CJI on November 28,” a SC official said in a statement.

The official also disclosed that the committee comprising Justices R M Lodha,H L Dattu and Ranjana Prakash Desai met seven times during which it interacted with the girl as well as recorded Justice Ganguly’s statement.

Ever since the intern’s blog hit headlines early this month there was intense speculation about the identity of the former judge. When contacted,Justice Ganguly told The Indian Express that he had denied the allegation levelled by the girl. “It is false allegation. I am a victim of situations. She was my intern, like my child. How used to come to my house. This is so unfortunate. How do you expect anyone to counter such an allegation and who will believe?”

Asked if he was contemplating resigning from his post,Justice Ganguly said,“I have not decided so far.”
