J&K: Militants fire at policeman in bid to snatch his rifle

Constable Mohammad Yousuf, who was posted at the entrance of the district court complex, was critically injured on Thursday after he was fired upon by a militant.

A policeman was injured when militants tried to snatch his service rifle in South Kashmir’s Shopian town. The militants, however, managed to flee from the spot.

A senior police officer said that constable Mohammad Yousuf, who was posted at the entrance of the district court complex, was critically injured on Thursday after he was fired upon by a militant. “It was a bid to snatch the service weapon of the policeman, but the attacker could not take away the weapon as the injured policeman foiled his attempt,” he said.

Soon after the attack, police launched a search operation in the area.

In the same district, an army personnel of the 62 RR who was injured in a gunfight with militants on Wednesday evening succumbed to his injuries today morning.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Muzaffar Jaan said the soldier who had sustained injuries last night succumbed to his injuries.

On Wednesday evening on a specific tip off, the army’s 62RR and Special Operation Group of J&K police cordoned off the Barbug village. As the search operations were ongoing, militants present in the village fired upon the army, injuring a soldier.

The official said that searches are being carried out in the area to track down the militants. Sources, however said that militants have escaped from the area under the cover of darkness.
