Despite declaring dry day in the notified areas (particularly in the rural belt) where block samities and zila parishads elections were conducted Sunday,many liquor vends were found open in villages in Jalandhar district.
The liquor vends were found open at Athola,Kohla and Wrayana villages even when the polling was on. The police got the information at around 3 pm,just an hour before the voting came to end at 4 pm and rushed to the spot and asked the vend owners to pull down shutters.
Contacted,DSP Kartarpur,Jasbir Singh Rai,said that some locals informed the police late afternoon that some liquor vends were open in the notified area where elections were taking place. I instructed the Lambra SHO to get those vends closed and take action as per the law, the DSP said. Police said some liquor vends were also found open in villages in Nakodar and Shahkot areas in the morning but were closed down just after the polling began.
However,a political leader said that most of the liquor vends remained open as the owners were confused about the dry day order. Vends were to be closed only in those area where the elections were to be conducted while those in city and nagar council areas were supposed to remain open,he said.
