In U-turn,Sena says Modi the right choice

The Shiv Sena Friday beat BJP in formally declaring Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate of NDA for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The Shiv Sena Friday beat BJP in formally declaring Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate of NDA for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

At 11 am,Sena MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut said,“The party welcomes the decision to elevate Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate in 2014 elections.” The Sena had also convened a media interaction at 2 pm,way ahead of BJP’s parliamentary party meeting in the national capital that started at 5 pm. However,it realised that a formal decision was being delayed. As a result, the party called off its media interaction. However, that did not dither the party leaders from going an extra mile to show their loyalty in Modi’s leadership.

Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said,“I am glad the reins of country are going in Modi’s hands at a time when Congress is neck deep in corruption and there is instability across the borders. The tough leadership of Modi who always advocated Hidutva is a welcome decision.”

“Finally, after a lot of churning the nectar has come out Modi’s way as the PM candidate. We have complete faith in his ability and leadership,” he added.

Sena’s attempt to undertake damage control was evident as it displayed its anxiousness to embrace Modi’s leadership. In the past one year the party had gone all out against Modi and displayed loyalty to L K Advani and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj.

It took them little time to reposition their politics. Till last week,Sena had maintained, citing the late Bal Thackeray’s preference, that Swaraj was the suitable prime ministerial candidate.

Edits in Saamna maintained that Swaraj was a better candidate than Modi. But on Thursday, there was no mention of Advani or Swaraj. Sources in Sena confirmed,“The transformation in Sena came over the moment they realised BJP was determined to declare Modi as its PM candidate overriding the resistance shown by Advani,Swaraj and others.”

Raut said,“Late on Thursday night,Modi and Uddhav Thackeray had a telephonic conversation. Thackeray gave his unconditional support to Modi.”
