Restiveness against the state government’s failure to provide relief broke into a clash Tuesday. Over two dozen people including half a dozen CISF personnel were injured during the clash after the latter had lathicharged them, lobbed teargas shells and fired warning shots in the air to prevent protesters from moving towards Salal hydel power project from Talwara in Reasi district.
The protesters were migrants settled in camps for two decades. Thousands of Hindu migrants from hilly areas of Reasi had settled in these camps during the militancy years.
The Supreme Court has directed the government to treat them at par with those who migrated from Kashmir. Provided only free rations and already agitating for cash relief and other facilities, they were protesting against the local administration for providing them water and electricity for the last one week.
Official sources agreed it was imperative that essential supplies reach them fast. “Till now, we have been only carrying out rescue operations. With people by and large rescued from flood-hit areas across Jammu, the need is to ensure supply of essentials,” a senior official said.
