Heroin worth Rs 95 cr seized, three arrested

Three persons,including a BSF constable,have been arrested.

The Tarn Taran police,in a joint operation with the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC),on Tuesday claimed to bust a major smuggling racket by recovering 19 kg of heroin — worth Rs 95 crore in the international market. Three persons, including a BSF constable, have been arrested.

Those accused have been identified as Rachpal Singh and Gurwinder Singh — residents of Ramuwal in Tarn Taran — and Gurpreet Singh,a resident of Chuslewar village, who police said was a BSF constable. Rachpal, the kingpin of the racket, was in touch with Pakistani-based smugglers and Indian officials. They have been booked under Section 21 of the NDPS Act.

“Rachpal Singh was earlier arrested by the district police. Following his arrest,an operation was launched by the district police jointly with SSOC,which led to the recovery 19 kg of heroin and unravelling of the racket… Rachpal Singh had managed to compromise certain low-level officials of the BSF who helped in the crossing of consignments across the border,” Tarn Taran SSP Rajjit said.

He added: “Preliminary questioning of Rachpal Singh revealed he was in touch with Pakistani smugglers… He has also spoken about the Indian smugglers who were being supplied heroin.”
