Army will impart training to youth from the Gujjar community in Jammu and Kashmir to enable them to get recruited in the country’s defence forces.
The assurance came from Lt General K J Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command, during the first ever interaction between Army and leaders of the local Gujjar community in the Kathua district.

“Efforts will be made to train local boys from the Gujjar community so as to prepare them for recruitment into the Indian Army,’’ the Western Army Commander said.
According to the defence ministry spokesperson, Lt Colonel Manish Mehta, the Western Army Commander also informed the community about the decision to hold recruitment rallies in Kathua and Samba districts. Significantly, the Army has not held any recruitment rally in these two districts, situated along the international border with Pakistan, for the last many years, leading to widespread resentment among locals. Both these districts have seen many terrorist attacks targeting the police and Army camps during the last few years.
