Girl elopes before marriage,father kills self,2 more serious

Unable to cope with the stigma of elopement of his daughter just a week before her marriage,a man allegedly committed suicide while his wife and son were battling for their lives after the trio consumed poison.

The marriage of the girl was to be solemnised on December seven but she eloped with another man earlier this week,SP (Karnal) Rakesh Arya said.

The family members,upset over the development,took the extreme step in their Sikri village yesterday,he said.

“The girl’s father has died while the condition of her mother and brother is serious,” the SP said.

Asked if there was any caste angle in the incident,Arya said “we are investigating. So far,none from the girl’s family has come forward with any statement.”
