Gandhi family kept hounding Hooda this budget session

The Congress had a clear edge over the INLD when the session began.

It had expected to sail through the budget session, but the Congress government in Haryana hit the choppy waters as issues related to the first family of the party —- the Gandhis —- returned to haunt it.

With Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president and former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and his MLA son Ajay being sent to jail after being convicted in the JBT Teachers Recruitment scam, the main opposition looked rudderless. However, the INLD soon cornered the government over alleged irregularities in the land deal between private realty giant DLF and a firm owned by Robert Vadra, son in law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Later, the Comptroller and Auditor General’s adverse observations on the issue of release of land to the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust in Gurgaon in violation of norms gave another ammunition to the Opposition to target the ruling party.

The government had prepared a foolproof plan to table the CAG report on the last day of the session so that the members do not get time to demand or discuss the issues raised. The CAG submitted the report on March 4 and the government tabled it on March 11. Congress president Sonia Gandhi was to visit Haryana twice —- on March 8 and march —- and the government didn’t want to embarrass her during the visit.

However, the CAG observations were reported by The Indian Express on March 6 and for the next two working days of the session, the entire INLD-SAD group and the BJP-HJC combine was up in the arms demanding judicial probe into the land release. On the last day,all INLD and lone SAD member and BJP’s Anil Vij were suspended from the House after Speaker Kuldeep Sharma failed to contain the members who were demanding discussion and a judicial inquiry into the matter.

Ironically, the government was defending it’s decision to release the land to the trust but evaded discussion on the same.

The Congress had a clear edge over the INLD when the session began. As the House assembled,it brought an adjournment motion on whether INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala should continue as the Leader of Opposition. The move was aimed at countering the adjournment motion submitted by the INLD on the land deals of Vadra. Finally, the government carried on with it’s motion though in absence of the INLD.

Besides these two,it hardly seems unusual that the sparring members broke the barriers of the parliamentary behaviour in the House. The Speaker once again came under attack for his alleged biased attitude towards the treasury benches.
