Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj said: “It looks a clear case of love affair between man and his niece, to which family took offence and handed them death. There is no involvement of village panchayat so far in primary investigation”. The police have been conducting raids to arrest other accused.

The police got to know about the incident only victim Jayram’ s wife Shakuntala Devi reached the police station. By the time police reached Amaitha village, family members had cremated the two on same pyre.

Villagers told the police that Jayram Manjhi, who would frequently visit his wife’s village, had developed affair with class nine girl, who was his niece. “As he was father of three and had normal marital relationship, family members took it casually. It was only when Jayram eloped with the girl, family took offence and punished them”, said a villager to the police.
