Fake encounter: Talks between Manipur govt, protestors fail

Talks between Manipur government and a major organisation leading protests over killing of a youth in an alleged fake encounter have collapsed, giving no hope to over four lakh students in the state.

Talks between Manipur government and a major organisation leading protests over killing of a youth in an alleged fake encounter have collapsed, giving no hope to over four lakh students in the state who could not attend classes for the last four months due to the stir.

‘Apunba Lup’,which has been agitating over killing of 28-year old Chungkham Sanjit by police commandos in an alleged fake encounter at Imphal market complex on July 23 last, said in a statement the government has “gone back” on its demands and it would continue its stir.

Official sources said today it was not possible to meet the demands raised by ‘Apunba Lup’ during the fourth round of talks held on January one since the government was considering handing over the case to the CBI.

However, the organisation said it had withdrawn two of their demands for resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on “moral ground” and for the transfer of Director General of Police Y Joykumar.

“But the government has gone back on its promises with regard to the remaining 11 demands, including the dismissal of the commandos, and therefore the agitation will continue,” it said in a statement.

The call for boycott of classes was given on September nine by three student organisations backing the AL — the All Manipur Students Union,Manipur Students Federation and Kangleipak Students Association.

Earlier, the chief minister had said his government is examining the legal aspects of handing over the investigation to CBI.
