Delhi HC’s contempt notice to MCD officer on public toilets

The Delhi High Court issued a contempt notice to an MCD officer for not improving the conditions of public toilets in its area ahead of the Commonwealth Games later this year despite the agency’s assurance to improve them.

The Delhi High Court today issued a contempt notice to an MCD officer for not improving the conditions of public toilets in its area ahead of the Commonwealth Games later this year despite the agency’s assurance to improve them.

A Division Bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul issued the notice to Anil Prakash,Sanitation Officer of MCD,seeking a reply by August 27 and said in case of default,the MCD Commissioner would be summoned for an explanation.

The Court’s direction came after the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) filed a report recently stating that while the condition of public toilets in NDMC area has improved the same in MCD area became worse and the authorities have failed to take appropriate steps.

Earlier,during the hearing of a PIL,MCD,in an affidavit,had assured the Court that the condition of public toilets in the city would be improved ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2010.

The Bench was hearing a petition filed by Social Jurists,an NGO,through counsel Ashok Aggarwal seeking a direction to the civic authorities to improve the condition of the public toilets as well as set up more such toilets in public places like markets,besides,separate toilets for women.
