A local court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to ‘absconding’ Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani and former VHP leader Jaideep Patel in post-Godhra riot cases of 2002.
City Sessions Judge A K Aaswani granted bail to both the saffron leaders for 90 days and they have been asked not to leave the country and to cooperate during investigations.
The Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing post-Godhra riots cases had declared Kodnani and Patel as absconders in the Naroda Patia and Naroda Gam riot cases,which had caught nation’s attention.
The court also instructed Kodnani and Patel not to enter Naroda area of the city till SIT files the charge sheet in the two cases.
SIT had issued summons on January 29 and 31 to Kodnani but she never turned up,following which she was declared absconder.
Patel was also declared absconder after he did not respond to SIT’s summons. There was no official word on the casualties. Rescue workers and police rushed to the site and ferried the injured and bodies to nearby hospitals.
The imambargah is located in a thickly populated part of Dera Ghazi Khan.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. It was also not immediately clear if the blast was caused by an explosive device or a suicide bomber.
