Police have launched a special drive to check auto-theft and snatching incidents by placing nakas at 42 different places in the city from January 5. During this drive 15,503 vehicles were checked and verified while 549 vehicles were penalised after the vehicle owners failed to produce all the necessary documents. The police also impounded 63 vehicles after the vehicle owners could not produce a single document.
The nakas are placed at three different times under the supervision of concerned area SHOs,police post in-charges and additional SHOs with the help of PCR and police station staff. The main purpose of the drive was to check all the vehicles in view of increasing theft and car snatching incidents. Another reason for the drive was that a large number of stolen vehicles were being used in snatching and other crimes.
Over 600 police personnel have been deployed on night duty to curb incidents of thefts occurring during the nights. The police have also impounded 66 auto-rickshaws in the past two days. These auto-rickshaws were registered in Punjab and Haryana, but did not have the permit to enter the city after 10 pm. In the past,a few cases of auto drivers from outside Chandigarh being involved in criminal cases were reported to the police.
