Closure starts for 98 Kanpur tanneries

Kanpur had 402 tanneries, of which 77 are lying defunct. The 98 tanneries are among the 323 that were operational.

Cracking down on polluting tanneries, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) Sunday initiated the process of closing 98 such units in Kanpur — that have been releasing toxic effluents into Ganga — by cutting electricity supply to them.

The UPPCB also stopped water supply to the tanneries that availed of government water connection, said officials. All tanneries that faced action are in Jajmau, a suburb.

Kanpur (City) Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Avinash Singh said the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had recently sent a team — comprising central and state pollution board officials — to examine the tanneries in Kanpur and the status of pollution of Ganga.

Consequently, the UPPCB had filed a report. Based on it, the state authorities asked the district administration to ensure the closure of 98 tanneries named in the report. The administration initiated the closure process by cutting power and water supply, said an official.
