Delhi Chief Electoral officer Rakesh Mehta has denied that he,as state’s erstwhile chief secretary, gave sanction to prosecute some government officials for their alleged role in a housing scam of 2005-06 under pressure.
Deposing before special CBI judge Sanjeev Jain,Mehta said he had not given sanction to prosecute some officials of Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RCS) for their alleged role in the 2005-06 multi-crore Cooperative Group Housing Society (CGHS) scam under CBI pressure or without application of mind.
“It is incorrect to suggest that I gave the sanction for prosecution under pressure from the CBI or that he was asked to expedite the grant of sanction,” Mehta said during his cross-examination by the counsel for accused RCS inspector Ram Nath and RCS senior auditor P K Thirwani.
He also denied having granted the sanction without going through the records of the case or “without application of independent mind” and brushed aside the suggestion that he had signed the “draft sanction order without perusing the relevant material.”
