Barot was arrested by CBI in September 2012. He was posted as DySP in Mehsana district of north Gujarat. In December 2012 CBI filed a chargesheet against eight policemen including Barot for killing Sadiq in a fake encounter case. CBI has alleged that Barot had gone to Mumbai and got the custody of Sadiq who was kept in illegal custody of Mumbai police.

Out of eight accused policemen seven were already out on bail. The Gujarat High Court had recently granted bail to two cops who are accused of firing at Sadiq from their service revolver.

This is the first case in which the CBI has attributed the role of IB officials in the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Mumbai.

It was the input of IB that branded Sadiq as Lashkar-e-Toiba who wanted to kill the then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi, now Prime Minister, and other BJP leaders.
