Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar said he has written to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley seeking Prime Minister’s intervention to acquire the house.
The prime minister Narendra Modi government is planning to purchase the residential property in London where Dr B R Ambedkar lived while studying in London School of Economic in 1921-22. The union finance minister Arun Jaitely has given the assurance to take up the matter with the ministry of external affairs Sushma Swaraj and prime minister Narendra Modi to facilitate take over of the property which has been put on sale for Rs 40 crores.
The decision to acquire the house where Ambedkar lived was pending with the UPA government lead by prime minister Manmohan Singh before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The initiative was then taken by Maharashtra government lead by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. And the first letter was dashed to the centre by the former Congress minister Nitin Raut.
However, state BJP government lead by Devendra Fadnavis has raked up the subject again with the centre both at party and administrative levels. Fadnavis himself has discussed the subject with central ministers and also organisational level.
On Saturday, Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar revived the subject by urging finance minister Arun Jaitley to re-look at the matter. Shelar said, “ Yes, I have written a letter to Jaitley informing him about Ambedkar’s house. I have asked the centre to acquire the property where Ambedkar lived. It can be preserved as a memorial.”
The 2,050 sq ft property is located on King Henry’s Road, London. The present owner has already put up the property for auction a few months ago. And its cost is estimated at Rs 40 crores, the information shared by FABO states.
The matter came to light after the Federation of Ambedkarites and Buddhist Organisation (FABO), UK wrote a letter to the Maharashtra
government and the Centre urging them to intervene as the property has been put up for auction.
Ambedkar’s great grandson Prakash Ambedkar has also shown interest to pursue the same. A couple of month ago he had also enquired into the matter.
However, the issue would require the intervention of the central government.
The overseas Ambedkarities who are keen on centre acquiring the property has urged the government to develop it as B R Ambedkar’s
memorial. In the letter written by FABO to state and centre, it said, “ There is a lot of interest overseas about B R Ambedkar. And there
are several intellectual writings which are out of bounds for the common people. The property can be developed where life and writings of B R Ambedkar can be show cased and preserved.”
