BJP MLA Sangeet Som, accused of making inflammatory speeches and uploading a fake video that sparked communal violence in Muzaffarnagar in 2013, has found himself in a fresh controversy.
One Devendra Mukhia of Noida’s Bisrakh village has alleged that Som furnished false information regarding his educational qualification in his affidavit to the Election Commission submitted ahead of the assembly polls. In a letter to the Commission and Meerut district magistrate Pankaj Yadav, Mukhia has claimed that Som’s submission in the affidavit that he has passed the Intermediate exam is false. To establish his claim, Mukhia has attached what he claims is a certificate from the Principal of the K K Jain Inter College, Khatauli, stating that Som failed his high school exam in 1993 and took a transfer certificate from the school the same year.

The district magistrate has ordered an inquiry in this regard. “The inquiry in this connection has been completed and I have sent a report to the government,” said Yadav.
Som, on his part, has denied the charge and said that Mukhia, who he claims is a relative of a Samajwadi Party leader, was trying to tarnish his image.
“The person who has charged me with giving false information is a history sheeter in Bisrakh police station and is also a relative of a ruling party leader in Meerut. The complaint is totally false. Devendra Mukhia has earlier levelled such charges against other leaders to blackmail them,” said Som.
Mukhia, meanwhile, has claimed that he was ready to face action if the charges proved to be false.
Som, an accused in a Muzaffarnagar riots case, was also jailed in connection with the case. The NDA government recently provided him Z plus security despite protests from Opposition leaders including those from the ruling Samajwadi Party in the state.
