ASI takes initiative on World Heritage Day

To celebrate the World Heritage Day on Saturday,the Archaeological Survey of India is organising a photo exhibition at the Pari Mahal in the foothills of Zabarwan.

It is going to be a treat for the heritage lovers of the Valley. To celebrate the World Heritage Day on Saturday,the Archaeological Survey of India is organising a photo exhibition at the Pari Mahal in the foothills of Zabarwan. The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the importance of conservation of heritage sites in Kashmir .

The recent activities of the Archaeological department in J-K – conservation of monuments,explorations and excavations will be on display. Photos of various monuments which have been inscribed in the World Heritage list shall also be on display.

Two brochures on the Centrally Protected Monuments or Sites in Kashmir region and Ladakh region will also be released on the occasion.

“The main objective of the World Heritage Day is to involve the youth of the area through local school and college students in protection,preservation and propagation of our great heritage for which our country is known for,” said an official statement of the ASI .

A cultural awareness programme will be the other attraction of the celebration. The theme for this year’s International Day for Monuments and Sites is “Heritage and Science”.

“This day offers an opportunity to raise the awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage,” said Superintending Archaeologist,Archaeological Survey of India,Srinagar Circle R Krishnaiah. “It is for the first time in the last twenty years that we are organizing such an exhibition,” he added.

“The photos will mostly be of heritage sites of Kashmir . The local population will find it appealing,” said Krishnaiah.

There are 65 heritage sites in the valley that come under the J-K Archaeological Department.

The venue that has been chosen for the event is the Centrally Protected Monument Pari Mahal in the foothills of Zabarwan.

People from varied areas have been invited to attend the photo exhibition. Prof Riyaz Punjabi will be the chief guest on the occasion and will inaugurate the exhibition.
