Amar may appear before Delhi court on Thursday

SP general secretary Amar Singh is expected to appear before a Delhi court to record his statement in connection with a cheating case.

Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh is expected to appear before a city court on Thursday to record his statement in connection with a cheating case based on his complaint lodged in 2007.

The Rajya Sabha MP has not appeared in the court despite being given several opportunities. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaweri Baweja on Wednesday gave him the “last and final opportunity” to come before the court and record his evidence.

Taking a stern view of Singh’s inordinate absence,the court had on February 20 imposed a cost of Rs 5,000 on him after his counsel sought adjournment.

In June 2007,based on Singh’s complaint,a case of cheating and impersonation was registered by the Special Cell against Barun Kumar Verma,(41),a resident of Lajpat Nagar. As per the complaint,the accused allegedly posed as a law officer and tried to extort Rs 5 crore from Amar Singh,claiming that he could fix a judge hearing a case against Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in the disproportionate assets case.

Verma,who was arrested on June 4,2007,from Singh’s residence,had denied all the charges against him. He was later released on bail.
