5 more pilgrims die of cardiac arrest enroute to Amarnath

Five more pilgrims,including a woman,died of cardiac arrest enroute to the 3,880 metre high shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir.

Five more pilgrims,including a woman,died of cardiac arrest enroute to the 3,880 metre high shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir today,raising the death toll during the pilgrimage to 12,official sources said.

Dileep Dass (40) of Maharashtra and Bahadur Valwa Bhai (45) of Gujarat died at the holy cave,they said.

Vinaik Balram (43),who was from Maharashtra,died at Pisu top along the traditional Pahalgam-cave route.

Prema Kohli (53),a pilgrim from Maharashtra who was admitted to the Soura Medical Institute here after she suffered a massive heart attack near the holy cave on June 21,breathed her last this morning,the sources said.

They said Ratan Singh (55),a resident of R S Pura in Jammu,died near the Nunwan base camp in Pahalgam this afternoon.

Earlier,five pilgrims had died of heart attacks on different dates since pilgrimage commenced on June 16,while two porters were killed in a landslide at Rail Pathri on the third day.

Meanwhile,the number pilgrims who have so far paid their obeisance at the shrine crossed the one lakh mark today.

By 3pm today,a total of 1,08,428 pilgrims had visited the cave and offered their prayers,the sources said,adding they included 11,679 pilgrims who reached it today.

Fresh batches of over 9,000 pilgrims left for the shrine from the base camps of Baltal in Ganderbal district and Nunwan-Pahalgam in Anantnag district today,the sources said.
