Plea for harsher punishment to Bhopal gas convicts admitted

The sentence awarded by the CJM court in the case was inadequate: Additional Solicitor General,Mohan Parashar

Admitting the CBI plea for raising the quantum of punishment awarded to those responsible for Bhopal Gas tragedy,the District and Session court fixed November 30 as the next date of hearing in the case.

CBI has filed an appeal in the court of District and Sessions Judge,Subhash Kakde,against the then Chief Judicial Magistrate,(CJM) Mohan P Tiwari’s verdict in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy case on the ground that the quantum of sentence awarded to the convicts was inadequate and it should be enhanced,given the seriousness of the crime.

Additional Solicitor General,Mohan Parashar,said the sentence awarded by the CJM court in the case was inadequate in view of the seriousness of the crime.

The District Judge also fixed October 18-19 as the next date of hearing in a related case separately filed by the NGOs seeking harsher punishment for the convicts.

On the plea challenging the CJM court judgement,filed by the then Chairman of the Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL),Keshub Mahindra and others,the court fixed October 30 as the next date of hearing. Mahindra and others have sought exemption from appearing in the court.

Mahindra and seven others were sentenced to two years imprisonment by the CJM in a judgement given on June 7. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy occurred on the intervening nights of December 2-3,1984 killing thousands of persons and maiming a large number of people.
