Samples taken from a patient in Navsari after the suspected diarrhea outbreak tested positive for cholera on Tuesday.
This makes Navsari the states second urban area, after Dhanera in Banaskantha district,to be hit by cholera within two weeks.
Meanwhile,27 residents of Navsaris Mithali Nagar extension area were hospitalised with diarrheal symptoms today, taking the number of suspected cases to 132.
At Dhanera,14 new cases were reported and six were hospitalised with diarrheal symptoms today.
Over 270 people have been hospitalised since the last week of June in Dhanera and five deaths have occured due to the outbreak.
According to epidemiology experts from the states Health and Family Welfare Department, the vibrio cholerae bacteria (which causes an infection in the small intestine leading to severe diarrhea) may have spread through piped water that had got contaminated while passing through gutters.
Cholera-hit Dhanera is also suffering from a water shortage, with the water supply being stopped from the depleted Sipu dam. The residents are now being supplied water through tankers.
