Cops probe reports of unidentified paragliders flying over Lohegaon

The city police are investigating into the case of two unidentified paragliders noticed flying above Lohegaon area on the evening of June 29 and on the morning of June 30.

The city police are investigating into the case of two unidentified paragliders noticed flying above Lohegaon area on the evening of June 29 and on the morning of June 30. The incident came to light after a pilot of a commercial airline reported the matter to the Air Traffic Control (ATC).

As per the information given by police sources,they are carrying out an inquiry into two paraglider like objects seen above Lohegaon,as reported to them by the authorities at the air traffic control. Senior inspector Prakash Shah of Airport police station said,”I can only say that an inquiry into the matter is currently on. We are speaking to residents of the area and other sources to get more information.”

Police sources added that they were also taking help from the Gliding Centre in Hadapsar. Captain Shailesh Charbhe,instructor-in-charge at the Gliding Centre,said,”The Air Traffic Control informed us that a pilot of a commercial airline reported seeing a canopy of a glider at 5.57 pm on June 29,Friday,and the ATC again reported a similar sight of an object with a canopy at 7.45 in the morning. On Friday and Saturday,the Gliding Centre is closed and no flights had taken off that day. We too are puzzled and investigating into it.”

Charbhe added,”Any flight that takes off from our Centre gets a clearance from the ATC and the details are communicated to them. We are always in touch.”

Sources at the Gliding Centre said all regular fliers have now been asked to a keep a watch on unidentified paragliders. “There are multiple possibilities. But looking at the timing given,it will have to be a motorised glider,” said a paraglider attached to the Centre. Airport authorities were not available for comment.
