A DAY after Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi wrote to Mamata Banerjee urging her to take prompt and strict action to check incidents of post poll violence in the state, the Trinamool Congress chief has reportedly asked her lieutenants to “check the party cadres”.
“After Trinamool’s victory in the polls, reports of post poll violence started coming in. Mamata Banerjee reacted immediately, asking her party lieutenants to check this. This isn’t good for democracy. Such incidents harm the very fabric of the political system,” said a close aide to Mamata.
He added that Mamata had issued instructions to party MPs Mukul Roy and Suvendu Adhikari to “control the cadre”.

Mamata’s move follows reports of Trinamool workers allegedly attacking Opposition cadres in a number of instances. On Monday itself, a person was killed in a clash allegedly between two Trinamool factions, in Nanoor of Birbhum district. This came four days after CPM’s Shyamali Pradhan defeated sitting Trinamool MLA Gadadhar Hazra from Nanoor in the Assembly polls.
State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury and CPM state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra had on Monday led a joint delegation to the Governor and submitted a memorandum regarding the post-poll violence allegedly unleashed by Trinamool workers across the state.
Following this, Tripathi had written to Mamata. “In the letter, Tripathi said law and order enforcing mechanism in the state should be suitably instructed to take prompt and strict action irrespective of political affiliation to deter such attacks,” a statement from Raj Bhavan said.
Meanwhile, Mamata will meet party MPs and MLAs on Wednesday at 3 pm. While a number of leaders have visited her since the poll results were announced, this is expected to be the first meeting of the party.
While post-poll violence is likely to be discussed in the meeting, a senior leader and former cabinet minister said: “Didi is very concerned about Trinamool’s defeat in certain unlikely seats. There has been a lot of infighting in some areas… She wants to start with seats where infighting has resulted in losses.”
For instance, party leaders said a complete overhaul is likely in Malda, where Trinamool didn’t win a single seat. The party is reportedly planning to reshuffle the district committee. Two ministers in the outgoing Mamata government — Krishnendu Chowdhury and Sabitri Mitra — have lost in Malda.
Similar changes are also likely in Siliguri and Darjeeling.
