Two cops suspended for taking pictures with Hardik Patel

Two policemen on Tuesday were suspended for allegedly taking pictures with Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel, who is in seven-day police custody facing charges of sedition and “waging war against the government.”

Two policemen on Tuesday were suspended for allegedly taking pictures with Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel, who is in seven-day police custody facing charges of sedition and “waging war against the government.” The suspension order stated that taking pictures with an accused under custody amounts to “indiscipline.”

One of the cops is posted at Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) while the other is posted at Ahmedabad Police Headquarters. Police officials said that the day Hardik Patel was arrested on October 23 the two policemen clicked pictures with him. Officials said that taking pictures of accused while in police custody by the officials amounted to indiscipline that’s what they have been suspended.

“We have suspended constable Mahendrasinh Javansinh after receiving a report from DCB. I don’t know much about the pictures but we took action after the DCB report,” Joint Commissioner of Police, Headquarters, S G Bhati told The Indian Express. Mahendrasinh was part of a team of 40 policemen who had gone to bring Hardik from Surat on October 23.

Besides, head constable Arun Dale, working as a computer operator with the DCB, has also been suspended. Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCB, Deepan Bhadran said that duo clicked pictures with the accused Hardik Patel and after initial inquiry they have been suspended.

Hardik was brought from Surat in connection with an FIR under sedition (121 A) and waging war against government (121) among other sections of Indian Penal Code. He is also facing a sedition case lodged by Surat police against which he had moved a petition in the high court which was rejected on Tuesday.
