To ease the tension between residents of Chhatarpur’s Rajpur Khurd village and African nationals, Minister of State for External Affairs (MEA) V K Singh and Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma held a meeting with village representatives Sunday.
The move comes after the assault on seven African nationals three days ago, and a week after a Congolese national was beaten to death.
Sources said south district police were asked to call the representatives to Chhatarpur Extension for a meeting with the minister, Verma and Special Commissioner of Police (law and order, southern range) P Kamaraj.

“The representatives discussed their issues and also requested police to call the African nationals for a meeting with them. They said the Africans should follow rules of Indian society,” said a senior officer.
President of Rural and Residents Welfare Association Mahabir Singh Dagar said, “Next time we see something wrong, we will inform police instead of getting into an argument with the foreigners.” He added that they are planning to hold a meeting with the Africans to “inform them about Indian culture”.
South district police also held meetings with residents of Rajpur Khurd and Maidan Garhi villages. The people were sensitised about various steps being taken by police on the issue.
Addressing the gathering, DCP (south) Ishwar Singh said, “The have come to our country, they are our guests and friends… The way you behave with them will have repercussions on our brothers living outside — Indians were attacked after the murder of the Congolese youth.”
Some residents complained that the foreign nationals are staying illegally in the locality and often drove rashly through the narrow streets. “We have never seen beat officers in our locality. If we complain against the nationals, they level false allegations against us,” said, Sonu Dagar, a resident.
Singh said police patrolling will be increased and a verification drive will be started to check original documents of foreign nationals.
