Patiala House Courts assault: 2 cops ‘identify’ lawyers including Vikram Singh Chauhan

On Saturday, police had arrested one of the accused lawyers, Sharma, but he was granted bail after an hour.

Two Delhi Police personnel have identified three lawyers including Vikram Singh Chauhan as being among those who assaulted students and journalists at Patiala House Courts, said sources.

The two police personnel, both posted at Tilak Marg police station, were present during the assault and recorded their statements under section 161 of CrPC Sunday, added the sources.

Manu Shankar, a reporter with Kairali TV, a Malayalam news channel, also identified the three lawyers and two others while recording his statement, said the sources.

“In their statements, the police personnel — one a beat constable and the other who was deployed at Patiala House Courts — claimed they were not aware of the names of the lawyers, but identified Vikram Singh Chauhan, Om Sharma and Yashpal Singh from video footage,” said an officer who did not want to be named.

“Among the two other lawyers the journalist identified, one is S S P Singh. Shankar said about 25 lawyers attacked him. He claimed he could identify them if they appear before him,” added the officer.

On Saturday, police had arrested one of the accused lawyers, Sharma, but he was granted bail after an hour.

Speaking to The Indian Express earlier, Sharma had said he had beaten up a JNU student after he was “provoked”.

However, police said he denied beating anyone up during questioning. Besides Sharma, Chauhan and Singh, were issued notice by police thrice, asking them to join the probe between Wednesday and Friday. Now, if they fail to join, the police are likely to move court seeking a warrant against them.
