Katwa gangrape: Court acquits all accused due to ‘lack of evidence’
The incident hit the headlines after CM Mamata Banerjee called it a “shajano ghatona” (concocted incident) and claimed that the victim’s husband was a CPM sympathiser.
THE FIVE accused in the Katwa gangrape and loot case were found not guilty by a fast track court in Burdwan on Friday owing to lack of evidence.
The court ruled that though there had been a dacoity in a local train, there was no evidence of rape and the involvement of the five accused not been established. “The prosecution has failed to prove the case,” it ruled.
On February 15, 2012, armed dacoits had stopped the Ahmedpur-Katwa passenger train near Ambalgram in Burdwan by holding the guard hostage. It was also alleged that they dragged out a woman and raped her in front of her daughter. An FIR was filed at Ketugram police station against eight persons. Later, CID took over the case.
“Justice has not been served. They have been let off by court but God will not spare them,” said the victim. The incident hit the headlines after CM Mamata Banerjee called it a “shajano ghatona” (concocted incident) and claimed that the victim’s husband was a CPM sympathiser.
