Kalikho Pul: A carpenter who became Arunachal chief minister

Recently, in July, he was ousted from his office after an order of Constitution Bench of Supreme Court.

Former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Kalikho Pum was found dead at his residence on Tuesday morning. Kalikho had served as Arunachal CM from February till July and he was at the centre of recent political turmoil in the state after he, along with other MLAs, rebeled against his party Congress.

Recently, in July, he was ousted from his office after an order of Constitution Bench of Supreme Court. Initial reports suggest that the 47-year-old leader might have committed suicide.

Here is a brief profile:

Kalikho Pul was sworn in as eighth Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh in February this year. Pul had worked as a carpenter and a night watchman. He sold paan and beedi to fund his education at night school. He lost his father at the age of six and his mother died when he was thirteen. Kalikho used to stay with his aunt under extreme financial constraints.

Pul was the General Secretary of students union for all three years in college. He got a chance to contest assembly polls in the state in 1995 on Congress party ticket.

Pul was general secretary of his college union for all the three years he was there. He won on a Congress ticket in 1995 and went on to become a minister. In fact, he served as a minister for 22 of his 23 years as MLA.

In a February 2016 interview to Indian Express, he said: “I have made it a point to help all poor people in need of medical treatment. Go to my official quarter, you will find at least 30 people who have come all the way from my constituency for treatment in Itanagar.”
