Jammu: Furore over youth’s killing, family claims ‘fake encounter’

The government, claimed that the Bemina youth had opened fire on CRPF and police personnel and was killed in retaliation, adding that firearms were also recovered from his possession.

A day after a suspected militant was killed in Jammu’s Kud Udhampur, opposition National Conference alleged that it was a fake encounter with even the family of the slain youth claiming he was a psychiatric patient who was on his way to Amritsar for treatment.

Protests also rocked Bemina, the locality from where the youth hailed. The government, however, claimed that the Bemina youth had opened fire on CRPF and police personnel and was killed in retaliation, adding that firearms were also recovered from his possession.

PDP’s Batamaloo MLA, Noor Mohammad, raised the issue in the Assembly as Bemina falls in his constituency. He urged the government to put all the facts about the encounter before the House. NC legislator Ali Mohammad Sager asked the government to explain whether it was a fake encounter.

On behalf of the J&K government, Agriculture Minister Ghulam Nabi Hanjura told the House that the State Road Transport Corporation bus in which the youth — identified as Tanveer Sultan — was travelling was stopped for search at Karnal, Nallah Kud by the security personnel.

“All the passengers were asked by the security forces to disembark from the bus for a search… one passenger opened fire on the search party. In the firing three people sustained bullet injuries. The person who opened fire was killed in retaliatory fire by the security forces,’’ said Hanjura, adding that an AK-47, a pistol, and other ammunition was recovered from Tanveer’s possession.

Tanveer’s family, meanwhile, claimed that he was a militant till 2004, but had no affiliation with it afterward.

“My brother was suffering from bi-polar disorder… He was on way to Amritsar in a bus for treatment and had even withdrawn Rs 60,000 from the bank and was carrying all the related documents including I-Card and Aadhaar card,’’ said Arshad Sultan, Tanveer’s older brother, a bank employee. On Tuesday, Tanveer’s family members left for Jammu to collect the body.
