Two youths have been arrested on Sunday in Eluru in West Godavari district in connection with the death of a 17-year-old girl at a government hospital. Eluru Rural Police said that Pydala Indumathi died late last night after being admitted to a hospital at 4 pm Saturday with 90 per cent burns. She was taken to the hospital after being found in the bathroom of her house in Chattaparu village. One of the two youths, D Peddababu alias Pedda Vicky and D Chinnababu alias Chinna Vicky, both brothers, was accused of stalking the girl.

WG Superintendent of Police Bhaskar Bhushan told The Indian Express that at the time of admission to hospital, the girl told the lady doctor who treated her that she set herself on fire after dousing kerosene as her family was constantly chiding her and held her responsible for Chinnababu alias Chinna Vicky stalking her and professing his love for her.

“In her dying declaration she stated that the two brothers entered her house on Saturday afternoon, doused her with kerosene and set her on fire. However, evidence shows that the bathroom in which she was found was bolted from inside at the time of incident. We suspect suicide but we have arrested the two youths in connection with the incident. They were constantly stalking her which became reason of tension between the two families. They had also stopped her from going out of the house,’’ SP Bhushan said.

They agreed not to attack each other. We are investigating what happened Saturday afternoon and how the girl ended up in the bathroom almost fully burnt,’’ an official said.

There was tense atmosphere outside the Eluru Government Hospital as the girl’s parents have refused to accept her body unless an inquiry was ordered. Students organisations and NGOs also staged a demonstration outside the hospital.
