Condemning the attack on Dalits in Una by cow-protection vigilante group, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh demanded prosecution and arrest of both the Gau Rakshaks as well as the state police official who have assisted them.
“Persecution and harassment of Dalits has continued in the hands of these self-styled gaurakshaks who are actually only extorting money in the name of protecting cows and cattle. The police openly allowed these vigilante’s to beat the Dalit youth mercilessly because they had skinned a dead cow, which was their right,” he said while questioning efficiency of the state police and failure to lodge an FIR.
The video circulated across social media showed the victims being attacked with iron rods and sticks and publicly paraded by the Gau Rakshak group after tying them to a vehicle. By the time the police arrived, the group had fled.
The Congress leader demanded that the police officials responsible should also be arrested for conniving with the perpetrators and prosecuted under relevant laws which prevent atrocities against the SC’s and ST’s.
Drawing parallels of organizational structures and non-registration between the RSS and gaurakshak or vigilante groups, Digvijay hinted that both were non-registered organization hence the question of banning them did not arise. “Number of times questions have been raised on banning the RSS, but like the vigilante groups (cow protection), even they are unregistered. They collect huge funds huge amount on recently concluded Gurupoornima which is unnaccounted. How much money comes has it been accounted for? That’s because RSS does not come under any act. RSS must let us know where does this money go?” he said.
