Unidentified miscreants on Wednesday evening opened fire in Doomdooma and Digboi in upper Assam, prompting the army to launch an operation especially in view of the fact that the incident occurred two days ahead of prime minister Narendra Modi arriving on a day-long visit to the state.
While a group of unidentified persons fired at the residence of a former Congress MLA in Doomdooma, a shopkeeper sustained bullet injuries in Digboi, both in Tinsukia district. Prime minister Modi is scheduled to attend a function to commission a mega gas cracker project in nearby Dibrugarh on Friday, after which he will inaugurate the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati.
“While the identity of the miscreants trying to create mischief and trigger panic is yet to be ascertained, we have received an SMS in which a hitherto unknown outfit called Moran Tiger Force apparently claimed responsibility for the incidents. The army is launching an operation in the area tonight,” Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay told The Indian Express late Wednesday night.

DGP Sahay, quoting preliminary reports said that the group, in its SMS warned of more such attacks if it was not taken seriously. Sahay however said there was not much information about the outfit called Moran Tiger Force (MTF). “Some one could be trying to do some mischief in the name of the Moran community,” he said.
“Though some eyewitnesses have given only some sketchy description of the vehicles used in both the incidents, we have at least one mobile number which will lead us to track the miscreants,” Sahay said.
Local reports on the other hand said the newly-formed outfit was also trying to create a fear psychosis among the people specifically keeping in mind the prime minister’s visit to Assam on Friday. Earlier, in November last year, the anti-talk ULFA faction headed by Paresh Baruah had targeted some Hindi-speaking people in upper Assam when BJP president Amit Shah was in Guwahati.
Prime minister Modi, who arrives in Assam on Friday morning, will first inaugurate the Brahmaputra Cracker & Polymer Ltd (BCPL) gas cracker near Dibrugarh, and then fly to Guwahati to inaugurate the 12th South Asian Games.
