With the Congress intensifying its attack on PM Narendra Modi over “plundering of public land” during his tenure as Gujarat CM, the BJP Saturday accused the Opposition party of levelling “false and baseless allegations to cover up its own corruption”.
Asserting that the land allotments were done as per law and through a “transparent three-tier process”, BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said: “Congress is a history-sheeter in making false charges as it has a policy of shoot and scoot and it has not been able to prove any charges against this government.”
Sharma said the Congress had no moral right to talk of graft as its “top leaders are embroiled in corruption”. He also alleged that the Congress is trying to rake up this issue ahead of Budget Session as it plans to stall Parliament again.
Following news reports about the Modi-led Gujarat government’s land deals with business associates of Anar Patel, daughter of current CM Anandiben Patel, the Congress has demanded an SIT probe monitored by the Supreme Court. “The SIT should cover all allotments and grants of public land when Anandiben Patel was the Revenue Minister and Modi was the CM,” Congress leader Anand Sharma said.
He alleged that there was “plunder” of public land and forest land during Modi’s tenure as CM. The Congress has asked the PM to come clean on the issue and asked if he was aware of the “clear conflict of interest” of then Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel while allocating government land near Gir Lion Sanctuary to a company allegedly owned by her daughter’s business partners.
Sharma said the land was allotted at a rate of Rs 15 per square metre. “That means Rs 60,000 per acre. The estimated market price of this land was to the tune of Rs 50 lakh per acre i.e. a total of Rs 125 crore for 250 acres,” the Congress leader said.
