23 Indian fishermen in British Navy’s custody: Union

The fishermen have been in the custody of the British Navy for the past two weeks after they strayed into British Indian Ocean territory Diego Garcia.

Twenty-three fishermen, nine of them from Kerala and others from Tamil Nadu, have been in the custody of the British Navy for the past two weeks after they strayed into British Indian Ocean territory Diego Garcia, a fishermen union has claimed.

According to Independent Fish Workers Federation general secretary T Peter, the men were in search of fishing field and accidentally trespassed. “We have written to the external affairs ministry to take urgent steps for their safe return,” Kerala Fisheries minister K Babu said.
