A team from the Election Commission Tuesday completed its two-day visit to “review the preparedness” for the impending Assembly elections, after holding interactions with administration and police officials.

“This visit was a prequel to the visit of the Election Commission in a few days. We talked to DMs and SPs through video conference and discussed their preparedness for elections. Law and order, security and vulnerability were discussed. It was stressed that the purity of electoral rolls be maintained at any cost, and all errors of duplicity or similar entries be removed. Addition and deletion of names from the rolls will be done transparently, and all stakeholders including political parties will be informed about them,” said Deputy Election Commissioner Vijay Kumar Dev at a press conference.

He said EVMs had reached UP, and the concerned officials had been asked to conduct first-level checks on the machines.

Dev said the officials have also been asked to make proper arrangements for postal ballots sent by government officials who are authorised to use the facility.

The EC official added that elections would be held with a special focus on physically-challenged voters.

“We are talking to civil societies and NGOs to first identify all these special voters, and then get them registered through appropriate facilitation. All necessary facilities such as ramps at polling stations will be provided to them, and the polling personnel are being sensitised about them,” he said.

He said the Commission has shifted its focus from providing ‘basic minimum facilities’ at polling stations, to providing ‘assured minimum facilities’ like toilets, drinking water and electricity, which will help in increasing the voter turnout. Dev said the EC will also increase the number of model polling stations, as compared to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
